Being Halloween season, I thought I would post something scary today. Charles dropped this honking big Chris King headset on the counter in front of me. It comes wrapped with a black instruction sheet, so to me looked like a can of Guinness (and about the same size).
To show the size of this 1.5” headset, the photos show it next to a standard (1 1/8”) size that we are all familiar with.

One, when you’re at that point during an epic ride, when you feel you’re really out there, absolutely taxing yourself, just over the hump of finding out you will complete this ride and return alive, when you feel you have met Mother Nature on a level playing field and given her a formidable challenge, a pretty girl will go by. She’ll be wearing little more than a sports bra, and carrying little more than a water bottle. She’ll be cheerful. And she will make you reconsider what you think about time, distance, and effort.

This month’s Build of the Month is a Giant Reign 0. The customer was upgrading from a well-ridden 4” bike, and wanted to take advantage of newer technologies to get both more travel and a little lighter bike.

Ok, when you are a new shop (as we are), you almost have to beg to get bike manufacturers to let you carry their lines. Most manufacturers already have dealers in place, who they don’t want to annoy by adding another dealer.
Charles had an advantage, being well known in the industry (which he got for working at shops for over 20 years now). And Berry, John, Sterling, Patty, and (most recently) Brett have been building on this rep, and it is paying off…

You know who you are. You’re the one who turns the porch light out on Halloween. Or maybe not, but you’ve wondered if you could get away with it. Well this year, you have a great excuse. You’re going to be at Passion, hanging out in your own comfortable clothes, or maybe somebody else’s, pretending to be dead, or very scarily alive. You’ll get to look your worst and act like a kid and everybody is going to wonder who you really are.

So come on down. There will be a basket of treats at the door but instead of some fattening candy, maybe you’ll get a patch kit, or a chain pin, or a tube, or not-yet bloody bandaids, or who knows what kinda trick the shop boys might play with you. Click below for details and to RSVP.

This month’s build of the month is a Surly Karate Monkey. It is a cyclocross bike, but one of the “monster cross” versions which are made to fit 29 inch mountain bike width tires.
“I have always wanted a “swiss army knife†bike that could do anything. The 29er movement had me curious, as did the tiny “monster cross†subculture. So, the Karate Monkey was a cost-effective way to experiment with all these things.“

Initial Impressions (before mounting):
This tire looks like a rear to me but I’m mounting it on the front because that’s what I was to told to do with it. The tire is lightweight and the sidewalls are very supple and flexible so I’m somewhat suspicious of its suitability for my 170mm (6.7 inch) travel Versus Blitz II. The knobs look like they’ll provide good traction but, as there are no ramps I don’t expect a fast roller. The tread is also not particularly deep so I don’t expect much in loose conditions. My initial expectations have been set low.

This Saturday, October 6th, is “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day.” So, go find yourself a kid and go riding, or if you don’t have one handy, BE a kid!

Personally, I enjoy being 12 years old again, every time I get on my bike.
Next year on October 4th, 2008, Passion Trail Bikes will be hosting a TAKMTBD event at Waterdog, when we will ride around the lake on a kid-friendly trail.
Good places to take a kid:
Arastradero Preserve, Palo Alto
Shoreline Park, Mountain View (Bay Trail access)
Wilder Ranch State Park, Santa Cruz
DeLaveaga Park, Santa Cruz.
This year MBOSC is hosting an event at DeLaveaga. Check out their website for more info:

Of all the cool new things we saw at Interbike, one of the hottest was the new 29” Float fork from Fox. Trek is supplying them on a number of their new models, and bought just about all of Fox’s production, at least for the short term. A couple of them did escape the mass purchase, and one or two of them ended up at Passion, yesterday in fact. If you have a 29er project in the works, or will in the near future, you may want to snap this up now, or risk waiting until Spring to have the chance to get another one.
